About the role
The Visual Design role combines design for interaction (UI/UX, design systems and digital products) and design for communication (brand, print, and visual storytelling). We are looking for someone who can balance functional clarity and emotional impact across a range of brand led multidisciplinary projects.
As a Senior Visual Designer, you are expected to represent depth in the craft of visual design: as an individual contributor, and as a mentor and guide for more junior colleagues. You will often be the backbone of your projects from beginning to end. You will help plan, prioritise, and deliver visual design activities within engagements. You will lead client conversations within your specialism, providing articulate recommendations and helping guide client choices. You will have opportunities to lead teams on projects and contribute to business development through proposal-writing and pitches.
We will rely on you to:
Be a master of your craft, enabling the team to deliver on challenges that are new to them and pushing the boundaries of what can be delivered
Set the bar for the quality of the work produced by the Design team
Set the strategic agenda of the Design team with the Head of Design
Autonomously run the Design team’s contribution to pitches and proposals
Establish innovative ways of creating ideas, bringing them to life and presenting them
Understand the needs of the live projects, matching them with the right Design team skills and team member
Look at the bigger picture to give client and customer context for design decisions
Use past experience and client knowledge to spot and resolve problems and blockers
Take on challenging conversations and situations to ensure the best possible solution within the context of a project
Are industry-leading in your craft and can use this to attract and retain talent
On a typical project you will:
Craft user interfaces for digital consumer and enterprise products and platforms
Design brand identities and brand collateral
Create scalable design language systems for typography, colour, components, and layouts
Quickly formulate creative ideas based on insights and intuition
Prototype ideas quickly (i.e., make the simplest artefact possible to test a hypothesis or assumption)
Work closely with the UX team to design experiences across devices, and touch-points
Participate in multi-disciplinary co-creation workshops at different points throughout the product- and service-design process
Create expressions for mood, tone, look/feel to help clients position their product, brand, or service
Evolve brand expression; by building on either existing direction, or creating one from scratch
Harmonise needs of the user (accessibility, usability, navigation, key features) with more emotional values of design to create unique and distinguished brand experiences
Frame a vision for art direction, photography, and illustration to reinforce product/service vision
Continually create digital products and concepts that push the bar for quality and excellence in each field/industry
We want you to have:
6+ years of professional visual design experience (although you might have had a different job title, like “UI Designer” or “Digital Designer”)
Highly developed design skills, demonstrated in your portfolio of recent work
Previous experience within an agency, client-side or consultancy working in a collaborative environment
Experience helping UK and/or Global brands design and deliver digital products and services.
An energetic and passionate design approach sweating the details – working across devices, touch-points and technologies
Confident presentation and storytelling abilities
Experience collaborating in multifunctional teams as the visual design lead
Proficiency with contemporary design and prototyping tools and methods
A passion for creating products that meet users functional and emotional needs
Business level ability in English
It would be a great if you had:
A university degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related design or artistic discipline
Experience working in a variety of organisations (start-up, corporate, agency/consultancy)
Academic, professional, or life experience from outside the design field that enriches your perspective as a designer
