What are Data jobs?

The field of data encompasses Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Data Analysts. Data Engineers create the systems that Scientists and Analysts use to examine data. Data Scientists make predictions based on data patterns. Data Analysts use data to answer questions.

Opportunity

Opportunities for data-related roles are likely to grow as more companies utilize data for their products and services. Emerging fields like the Internet of Things, which allow businesses to work with data in new ways, are also likely to offer Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Data Analysts more opportunities.

  • Recent changes to the sector

The biggest recent change in the data sector is its rapid expansion. Data is becoming huge, and businesses across most industries are hiring Data Scientists to help them make better business decisions and forecast future performance.

  • Salt’s advice for securing a Data job

    Employers’ requirements for Data jobs

Employers looking to fill data roles will prefer candidates who have previously worked with statistics, analytics, and applied mathematics. Naturally, experience working in Data Science, Engineering, or Analytics is also a big plus, as is having a good knowledge of machine learning capability and associated algorithms.

    Resume requirements for Data professionals

Your resume should include relevant work experience, along with technical skills like SQL and Python capabilities. Industry-specific experience will also help in securing specific roles. For Data Scientists, details of your PhD (if you have one) are desirable.

    Interview preparation

During your interview, you should be prepared to talk about your PhD or any other relevant qualifications you have undertaken. Questions may vary by industry, but expect to discuss what you have learned from your previous jobs and how you would bring that knowledge to the table.

    Educational requirements

Data Scientist applicants will ideally have studied statistics or mathematics academically. Candidates with PhD qualifications are preferred for high-level Data Science roles.

Top Tip

"Stand out from the crowd; talk about what you’ve achieved and how you got there from detailing ds models you’ve worked with to the data operation you’ve helped scale."
