Staying updated on emerging and changing technologies, compliance, and legal and security practices is essential in this high-volume, deadline-driven role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development and Implementation: Lead the development and implementation of secure data lifecycle practices and services to ensure that highly sensitive research data is stored and used according to relevant policies and best practices.

  • Collaboration: Work with Cyber Security, Data Governance, Legal, and Solution Architects to establish sustainable secure data processes, platforms, and tools, including monitoring and hands-on setup of end-to-end services.
  • Standards and Guidelines: Contribute to the development of standards and guidelines, identifying opportunities for improvement in data lifecycle management.
  • Training and Mentorship: Develop and deliver training on secure data lifecycle management and mentor research-domain colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Compliance and Audits: Support certifications and compliance activities, including statutory audits by the Audit Office of NSW.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Stay updated on legal, regulatory compliance, and contractual obligations related to the management of research data.
  • Threat Awareness: Promote awareness of emerging threats to research data security within the organisation.
  • Metrics Development: Develop and improve metrics to drive secure data lifecycle management practices.

Skills and Experience

  • Qualifications: Relevant tertiary qualification with 5+ years of software engineering experience, including at least two years in data security and lifecycle management.
  • Data Security Expertise: In-depth understanding of common data security risks and demonstrated experience in secure data lifecycle management practices and tooling.
  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with secure data lifecycle management in a research context, complying with relevant standards and frameworks (e.g., Australian Privacy Act, HIPAA, ISO27001).
  • Technical Skills: Experience with research data storage and management technologies (AWS, Azure, Data Centre Hardware).
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate complex requirements into solutions.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a range of people within an organisation.
