Senior Engineer- UNIX

This role is a senior member of the UNIX Support team, providing operational support. As the Senior UNIX Engineer, you will be interacting with domestic and global infrastructure suppliers, managed service providers, business units, IT projects and support teams

Responsibilities:

• Provide 3rd level technical support on UNIX Infrastructure, troubleshooting and fault rectification of high-level technical issues related to networking equipment and services
• Maintain key infrastructure systems.
• Design and evaluate new solutions (hardware/software) where required.
• Provide solutions to identified problems; progressing through to the design, build and deploy phases.
• Key technical resource for critical system failures.
• UNIX System Administration duties including but not restricted to.
• Implement permanent solutions to resolve identified problems.
• Analysis and deployment of third-party software.
• Write and maintain scripts in some administrative language (Ansible, Altiris and Bigfix/IEM).
• System installation and configuration.
• Own, manage and resolve assigned incidents and problems.
• Action and delegate service tickets as appropriate or as assigned by Team Leader and Manager.
• Ensure that the operational requirements for the delivery of quality production systems are maintained for the business and their expectations.
• Be the primary technical resource for project related and administrative tasks.

Requirements:

• Tertiary level qualifications in Business, Commerce, Information Services or an IT related discipline are desirable.
• SUN Solaris System Administration (versions 8, 9, 10 & 11).
  • Redhat Linux
  • Enterprise Servers
  • Enterprise Storage Systems (, HDS, NetApp, Brocade, McData)
• Extensive working knowledge of the most common Open source applications including
  • Squid
  • Samba
  • OpenSSH / OpenSSL
  • Apache / Tomcat
• Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them.
• A solid understanding of all aspects of UNIX systems administration; for example, configuration of mail systems, system installation and configuration, printing systems, fundamentals of security, installing third-party software.
• A solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (“inode”, “superblock”).
• A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts;
• Ability to program in an administrative language (Tk, Perl, shell).
• Ability to port C programs from one platform to another, and to write small C programs.
