  • How to get a job in the eCommerce industry

    Employers’ requirements for eCommerce professionals

Employers will want to know whether you can handle the day-to-day technical project tasks of being an eCommerce specialist, as well as being able to adhere to client methods. They will also want to see that potential employees can work well within a team and confidently express valuable ideas and opinions to a group. Furthermore, eCommerce professionals are expected to help develop cutting-edge technical solutions to keep the employer ahead of the competition.

    CV requirements for eCommerce jobs

Previous experience within eCommerce platforms is essential (such as Hybris, ATG, WebSphere Commerce, Demandware, and Magento), which applicants can display via a portfolio or a list of job experience and background details. Examples of experience in areas like conversion rate optimization, UX, online merchandising, A/B Testing, platform migrations, and reporting will also stand a candidate in good stead. Some experience working with third-party agencies and working across different departments may also be beneficial but will be dependent on the employer.

    Interview preparation

For the interview stage, it may be necessary to show a track record of increasing conversion rates in previous roles, as well what level of budgetary responsibility you had. For managerial positions, you will likely have to demonstrate experience of managing and motivating teams. Interviewers will also want to see that a candidate is knowledgeable about the company and they might ask, for example, how your experience can relate to the work their organization does and how exactly you can benefit the company.

    Educational requirements

A degree relating to marketing is ideal for an eCommerce role. However, it can be open as eComm is more commercial. Normally a Business and/or Marketing degree would work well.

Top Tip

"Always outline your direct reports and their responsibilities. Some eCommerce professionals manage everyone from Buying and Merch, Supply Chain to Tech...don’t sell yourself short!"
