jobs, huge marketplace giants like Amazon and eBay will always need professionals to enhance their online offering. There has also been a rise in retail chains investing more in eCommerce, with online sales hitting an all-time high in 2018.
The eCommerce world is constantly changing, as can be seen with the proliferation of multi-channel campaigns in recent times, and eCommerce professionals must be up-to-speed with these kinds of developments. As eCommerce has not yet reached its maturity, aspects like social commerce and the explosion of mobile usage will likely produce even more undefined job roles in the future. Being able to adapt to this ever-changing industry will ensure you can maintain job security and progress up the career ladder.
Roles within the industry are expected to increase in line with the growing prevalence of eCommerce sites and the ever-expanding spend on goods and digital services. eCommerce is overall forecasted to have an outstanding long-term global outlook, and as such, represents a potentially long and prosperous career.
Employers will want to know whether you can handle the day-to-day technical project tasks of being an eCommerce specialist, as well as being able to adhere to client methods. They will also want to see that potential employees can work well within a team and confidently express valuable ideas and opinions to a group. Furthermore, eCommerce professionals are expected to help develop cutting-edge technical solutions to keep the employer ahead of the competition.
Previous experience within eCommerce platforms is essential (such as Hybris, ATG, WebSphere Commerce, Demandware, and Magento), which applicants can display via a portfolio or a list of job experience and background details. Examples of experience in areas like conversion rate optimization, UX, online merchandising, A/B Testing, platform migrations, and reporting will also stand a candidate in good stead. Some experience working with third-party agencies and working across different departments may also be beneficial but will be dependent on the employer.
For the interview stage, it may be necessary to show a track record of increasing conversion rates in previous roles, as well what level of budgetary responsibility you had. For managerial positions, you will likely have to demonstrate experience of managing and motivating teams. Interviewers will also want to see that a candidate is knowledgeable about the company and they might ask, for example, how your experience can relate to the work their organization does and how exactly you can benefit the company.
A degree relating to marketing is ideal for an eCommerce role. However, it can be open as eComm is more commercial. Normally a Business and/or Marketing degree would work well.
