Chief Technology Officer (health)

A user-friendly, scalable web-application that is built for nurses to run in thousands of existing private and public clinics. The application facilitates nurses operating at top of scope. The nurse can call our doctor into the consult room with the patient immediately through a live video connection. The doctor and nurse together diagnose, and the doctor can provide a sick note, script and referral. The teamwork between health skills will be further enhanced, in time, through clinical algorithms and healthcare episode management.

As every nurse can now be a place of specialised care, the solution makes care from multi-disciplinary teams available to even the most far-flung areas. Where the nurse can treat the issue, the cost is the lowest it can be. However, even if a doctor is called via video connection, the consultation lasts on average only 5 minutes, reducing the doctor cost too.

Furthermore, given that we holds a single clinical view of the patient, patients can be managed over time by the lowest cost resource during each encounter with the health system we enable. Health outcomes improve due to lower cost, greater access, less redundancy in testing and examinations, and teamwork across skills.

In time, our strategy is to extend the reach of our tech platform (to be discussed during engagement).

There has been a remarkably rapid uptake of the our offering thanks to its value to clinics, health funders and doctors. The organisation is on a pathway to rapidly scale this offering in South Africa and internationally. In addition, it has several new products in its pipeline. Nevertheless, the organisation is still in its infancy. And it is time to grow our team…

Role Specification – CTO

Role Profile

Purpose

The CTO will work closely alongside the CEO, Head of Product, and the rest of the leadership team in leading the organisation and establishing its high-level healthcare strategic play. The CTO will predominantly be focused on turning the company’s strategic vision and associated objectives into a well-executed, innovative product that is exceptionally delivered to the market. The role includes leading the engineering function and working together with all other functions within the organisation, using data in all decision-making.

Importantly, the successful candidate needs to be socially minded and should want to apply their creativity and skills to reimagining the way out-of-hospital healthcare can be delivered to all South Africans (and internationally) when enabled by technology.

Strategic outputs

The role’s responsibilities:

✔ Co-create the strategic direction of our healthcare approach, particularly its associated manifestation in technology, with the CEO and Head of Product.

✔ Plan the engineering roadmap and team structures necessary to deliver on the strategic roadmap.

✔ Oversee software engineering processes to produce the highest quality outputs possible, while effectively delivering on the organisation’s technology needs.

✔ Deliver efficiency and alignment of daily operations to Healthforce’s strategy through data-driven decision-making and leadership.

✔ Lead a technology and software engineering function so that the Healthforce technology product meets customer needs.

✔ Deliver the desired Healthforce customer experience.

Knowledge

✔ Breadth of understanding of Agile processes & methodologies

✔ Competency across multiple programming languages

Experience

✔ 5+ years experience in leadership positions with teams 5-20+ in size

✔ 7+ years experience in building technology applications (directly or in leadership roles)

✔ Working with external contractors and in-sourced teams (beneficial to have experience in building internal teams)

✔ Working with external stakeholders to the company and to the engineering team

✔ Building customer facing applications (mobile and web)

✔ Building backend systems integration across multiple vendors and systems

✔ Building and scaling software technology products

✔ Motivating and leading cross-functional teams

✔ Creative problem-solving

✔ Desirable: Experience in the healthcare industry

✔ Excel (advanced), Slack, Asana, GSuite, Jira, Github

Education

✔ Tertiary or equivalent set of qualification in a technical subject, ideally computer science, engineering, information systems

✔ Relevant courses and qualifications in people management, agile processes, digital and technical project management is desirable
