Employers’ Requirements

Keeping on top of all the latest trends is key. Everything from colour palettes to new fonts. Having the ability to illustrate along with a hybrid digital capability and understanding are definite bonuses these days.

Constantly update your folio every time you complete a project worth featuring. Make sure the work is the hero and don’t make your folio/site tricky to navigate or viewers/employers will switch off.

Refresher courses can be helpful along with filling any education gaps that may occur if your current role has isolated you.

CV Requirements

Chronologically list the companies you have worked at along with the brands that you have worked on and include an interview highlighting the type of work you feel most passionate about.

You’re a Designer, lay out your CV to reflect that and remember that your reader has little time and usually scans CVs quickly for key information before they move on to your portfolio. Highlight any awards you may have collected.

Don’t just write one CV, be prepared to write several bespoke versions to be as relevant as possible for each job you apply for.

Interview Preparation

Research the company you are meeting with so you are specific rather than generic. Handpick around three or four projects that you can talk about in-depth to demonstrate how you think and any obstacles you had to overcome. Delve into the thinking not just the colours or font selection.

Educational Requirements

While a Design diploma from one of the many Design colleges is helpful to start with your portfolio of work is the living demonstration of that education and soon outweighs its relevance.
