Location: Central London (Hybrid – 1-2 days on-site per week)

Rate: £500/day (Inside IR35)

Contract: 6 months (initial)

Start: ASAP/on notice

Salt’s Public Sector team is proud to be partnered with a forward-thinking Local Government organisation in Central London, currently delivering a large-scale corporate data programme. We’re seeking an experienced Data Engineer with a strong background in Microsoft Azure and Power BI to play a key role in leading the council’s Modern Data Platform and supporting improved data-driven decision-making across services.


The Role:

As a Data Engineer, you’ll be embedded within the Technology and Digital Services function and take ownership of the core Azure data stack used to deliver reporting and insight across the organisation. Working closely with stakeholders across council departments-as well as external partners like the NHS and voluntary sector-you’ll lead the integration of datasets, development of data pipelines, and optimisation of Power BI-based analytics solutions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the management and development of the organisation’s Modern Data Platform (Azure-based)
  • Build and maintain robust ETL/ELT pipelines, data models, and reporting marts
  • Develop Power BI dashboards and implement best practice modelling and workspace governance
  • Integrate data from internal departments and external agencies to support operational and strategic insight
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders to identify opportunities to improve services through better use of data
  • Contribute to the wider data transformation agenda and support the organisation’s shift towards data-driven decision making

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience delivering data engineering solutions in Microsoft Azure (e.g. Data Factory, Synapse, Azure SQL, Data Lake)
  • Strong proficiency in Power BI, including DAX, data modelling, and deployment
  • Experience designing and implementing data warehouses and star schema models
  • Background in building scalable data pipelines and APIs
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Previous experience in local government or wider public sector highly desirable
