Demand Vs Offer
Development has changed the way we consume media, talk with each other or exchange information. In a nutshell, it has changed the way we live. Due to this change, many new jobs have emerged within Development. A couple of years ago, it might have been enough to know Java and C++, while today experts in Ruby, Swift or Python are in high demand. Although there are more job opportunities within Development, it has not gotten necessarily easier to find a job in this industry as the employment market is extremely competitive.
Popular Industries
The majority of Development jobs are offered in the Technology sector. However, a relatively large amount of Developers are also in demand by other industries, including the media, marketing, public relations, finance, accounting, and engineering sector. In the Technology sector, most roles are on a permanent basis, while the other industries have more contract job openings.
Recent Changes
Development has become one of the fastest-changing sectors in the technology industry, which is why Developers have to always keep themselves up-to-date about the latest trends. Another difference is that the importance of Java as a programming language has been declining. Thus, it is advisable for Developers to learn new programming languages.
Future Prospects
Although a lot of self-learning is expected in order to progress in your career, many companies also offer training programmes with more experienced Developers. This makes daily working life less monotonous and more challenging. If you are able to gain a lot of knowledge and skills in your specialist sector within a short time, you have a good chance in getting promoted very quickly. If you start off as a junior in a company, you usually get your first promotion after three to four years to a more senior role.
Employers’ Requirements
For Development jobs, employers expect their future employees to have a wide range of soft skills and hard skills. Among the most important soft skills are attention to detail, teamwork, ability to work under extreme pressure, and excellent communications skills.
The most crucial hard skills for Developers are proficient knowledge about web application frameworks, server-side languages, database management systems, and understanding of web security.
CV Requirements
As a Developer, you should ensure your key competencies are included on your CV. Among these competencies are the ability to write code in at least two programming language (the more, the merrier!), the ability to design the architecture of an application, and make decisions concerning the best programming languages and designs for projects. In almost all Development jobs, you are also expected to test applications on different browsers and devices, and to know how to contribute to Open Source projects.
Interview Preparation
For Development jobs, it is usual that you have a three-stage interview process. It starts off with a technical telephone interview, followed by a face-to-face interview and is then concluded by the submission of a sample project, which shows how good your coding skills are. In the face-to-face interview, employers tend to ask questions which require critical thinking and the ability to learn new things. Examples of these questions are:
1) Which project are you most proud of and why?
2) Which project are you least proud of and why?
3) What would you do when users get a “connection refused” when they try to access a web application but the application is still running?
Educational Requirements
There are no strict educational requirements in order to become a Developer. If you can show and prove in the interview that you have the required knowledge and experience to do a job, it will not be an obstacle if you do not have a degree. However, many employers advise future employees to do a degree in informatics, web development, computer science, or informatics as these studies help to acquire the fundamentals for becoming a successful Developer.
