Head of Technology – Real Time Payments

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an accomplished technology leader to take ownership of a critical Real Time Payments technology domain within a large-scale enterprise environment.

This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for the technology strategy, engineering capability, operational performance, and ongoing transformation of a business-critical payments platform operating 24/7. You’ll lead a significant global technology function while driving innovation, modern engineering practices, and the evolution of next-generation payment services.

This role would suit a technology executive who combines deep engineering credibility with strong people leadership and a passion for delivering resilient, scalable, and secure payment systems.

The Opportunity

As Head of Technology – Real Time Payments, you will be responsible for leading the technology strategy and execution across a complex payments ecosystem.

You will oversee the delivery and operation of mission-critical, low-latency payment platforms while driving modernisation initiatives that improve customer outcomes, operational resilience, and engineering excellence.

Working closely with senior executives, business leaders, regulators, industry partners, and engineering teams, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of real-time payments capability.

Key Responsibilities

Technology & Engineering Leadership

• Lead technology strategy, architecture, and engineering delivery across the real-time payments landscape
• Champion modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, DevSecOps, automation, and quality engineering
• Drive the adoption of API-first, cloud-enabled, and platform-based architectures
• Provide technical leadership and guidance across software engineering, architecture, and platform teams

Operational Excellence

• Ensure the availability, resilience, and performance of critical payment services operating around the clock
• Lead production operations, incident management, service reliability, and observability initiatives
• Drive continuous improvement in operational performance, stability, and service quality
• Oversee release management and deployment strategies to minimise risk and maximise uptime

Transformation & Innovation

• Lead modernisation programs focused on simplifying legacy environments and enhancing platform capability
• Foster a culture of innovation, automation, and continuous improvement
• Improve developer productivity and engineering effectiveness through tooling and process enhancements
• Support strategic growth initiatives across the payments domain

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

• Lead and develop a large, geographically distributed technology organisation
• Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning
• Partner with senior executives and key stakeholders to align technology outcomes with business priorities
• Manage strategic vendors and external partners across the payments ecosystem

About You

You are a respected technology leader with a proven track record of delivering large-scale payment or transaction banking platforms.

You bring deep technical expertise alongside strong leadership capability and have successfully led complex technology environments where reliability, security, and performance are non-negotiable.

We’re looking for experience in:

• Real-time payments, transaction banking, or mission-critical financial services platforms
• Payment schemes such as NPP or equivalent real-time payment networks
• Large-scale software engineering environments
• Microservices, APIs, cloud technologies, DevOps, and CI/CD practices
• Leading large distributed engineering teams across multiple locations
• Technology transformation, modernisation, and cultural change programs
• Operational leadership within highly available 24/7 environments
