Senior BI & Data Engineering Consultant | Contract | 6 Months | Cape Town

About the Role

A large South African retailer is looking to move beyond Excel-based reporting and build a meaningful analytics and BI capability. They need a senior consultant who can engage directly with business stakeholders, assess the current data environment, define what good looks like, and then build it. This is both an advisory and a hands-on delivery role – the right person is comfortable doing both without needing a team around them to execute.

Due to the high volume of applications expected, candidates who have not received feedback within two weeks of applying should consider their application unsuccessful.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage GRC stakeholders to understand business objectives, current reporting challenges, and priority requirements
• Help define KPIs and measures for tracking business performance and strategic initiatives
• Investigate data sources, assess data quality, availability, and integration gaps
• Recommend an appropriate reporting and analytics approach based on business needs and the existing technology environment
• Design and develop data pipelines, transformations, and data models where required
• Build reports and dashboards that support monitoring, proactive analysis, and business decision-making
• Validate outputs with stakeholders and refine solutions based on feedback
• Take full ownership of delivery, communicating progress, dependencies, and issues clearly throughout

Requirements

• Senior-level experience delivering end-to-end data and BI solutions, from requirements gathering through to development
• Strong SQL, data modelling, and data transformation capability
• Hands-on experience building data pipelines and integrating data from multiple sources
• Proven BI development experience; able to build dashboards and reports that drive real business decisions
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to work with stakeholders whose requirements are not yet fully defined
• Ability to assess an existing data environment and make practical, grounded solution design recommendations
• Comfortable working independently across the full delivery lifecycle

Role Details

• Duration: 6 months
• Start date: ASAP, subject to selection and onboarding
• Location: Cape Town, 4 days on-site per week
