Software Engineer

Salt is currently hiring a Software Engineer for a client of ours in Amsterdam.

This is a 6 month contract as a freelance engagement, 40 hours a week.

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join a backend engineering team focused on modernising and scaling core platform services. You will contribute to cloud migration initiatives, system design, and the development of resilient, high-performing applications using modern engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend applications and services.
• Deliver high-quality, scalable code with strong focus on automation and reliability.
• Contribute to on-premise to AWS migration projects and cloud-native architectures.
• Own services end-to-end, including monitoring, deployments, incident resolution, and operational support.
• Participate in system design, architectural discussions, and technical decision-making.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver business-critical solutions.
• Drive continuous improvement across systems, processes, and engineering standards.
• Participate in an on-call rotation when required.

Required Skills & Experience

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Strong Java development experience.
• Strong AWS experience, including services such as DynamoDB, RDS, and Lambda.
• Experience migrating applications from on-premise environments to AWS.
• Experience with Kafka and Cassandra.
• Strong understanding of monitoring, alerting, observability, and operational best practices.
• Experience with distributed systems and system design.
• Excellent communication skills with a high degree of autonomy and accountability.

Nice to Have

• TypeScript or JavaScript experience.
• Experience building new products or platform capabilities.
• Experience within attractions, ticketing, or marketplace platforms.
