Frequently asked questions

  • What makes Salt different from other recruitment agencies?

At Salt, recruitment is our craft. With over 23 years of experience, we’ve evolved beyond traditional recruitment to deliver integrated talent solutions that combine consulting, recruitment, and delivery – helping organisations solve complex hiring challenges, not just fill roles.

Our approach is human-led and technology-enabled. Every search is driven by deep expertise and relationships, supported by data, insight, and tools that help us identify, engage, and secure the right talent – efficiently and effectively.

Salt is a global organisation, and we operate with a truly global mindset. Whether you’re hiring in New Zealand or across multiple regions, we combine local expertise with global insight to help you understand talent trends, benchmark effectively, and make informed hiring decisions.

Our reach is another key differentiator. With a community of over 2 million engaged professionals built over more than two decades, we’re able to connect your opportunity with the right talent quickly and credibly.

But what really sets us apart is our commitment beyond placement. We focus on long-term success by supporting both clients and candidates through onboarding and beyond to ensure a seamless transition and lasting impact. Many of our client relationships span years, reflecting the value we place on partnerships over transactions.

Underpinning everything we do are our values. They’re not just words on a website or an office wall – we actively measure ourselves against them every week, as individuals and as a business. For us, culture should be felt, not described. Whether you’re a colleague, client, or candidate, you should experience our values coming to life in every interaction.

And yes, like salt in the kitchen, our role is to enhance and preserve, enhancing the experience for our clients and candidates, and preserving the relationships we build. It’s why, after more than two decades in business, many of our clients continue to partner with us.

  • What types of roles and functions does Salt recruit for?

We are experts in five core specialisations across our global and APAC business: Creative, Marketing, Sales, Technology, and HR & Business Operations. In New Zealand, we also possess significant Accounting, Finance & Supply Chain capabilities, reflecting the local market’s needs.

Within these functions, we support hiring across the full spectrum, from entry-level roles through to leadership, C-Suite, and advisory positions.

While our expertise is rooted in the digital landscape, we are industry agnostic and partner with organisations ranging from high-growth start-ups to global enterprises. Whether you’re making your first hire or scaling teams at pace, we have the experience and reach to support your needs.

  • Do you recruit both permanent and contract roles?

Yes. We recruit across permanent, fractional, contract, and temporary roles.
Once we understand your hiring needs, we’ll work with you to shape the right solution by providing insight into the most effective approach based on your objectives, timelines, and team structure. Whether you’re hiring for a single role or need flexible talent to support business growth, our talent experts can support you.

  • How do I get started working with Salt?

Let’s talk! We want to understand what’s important to you when choosing a talent solutions partner, so we don’t make assumptions. We can meet face-to-face or connect virtually – whatever works best for you.

Our success has been built on trust, credibility, and delivery, and that starts from the first conversation. If we can’t help, we’ll tell you and point you in the right direction.

  • What information do you need to begin a talent search?

The information we need will depend on the type of role you’re hiring for – whether it’s a short-term requirement or a permanent position. We’ll guide you through this and help shape the brief.

To get started, it’s helpful to think about your budget, when you need someone to start, and any non-negotiables for the role. An outline of your internal process is also useful, as it helps us align timelines and expectations early.

  • How long does it typically take to hire in New Zealand?

Time to hire can vary significantly depending on the role, market, and hiring approach. Rather than working to fixed timelines, we focus on delivering with urgency while ensuring the right outcome for both clients and candidates.

For some roles – particularly temporary or contract positions – we can move at pace, leveraging pre-qualified candidates from our community to accelerate the process. For more complex or permanent hires, the process may take longer to ensure the right level of assessment, alignment, and long-term fit.

Ultimately, timelines will vary depending on the role, market, and hiring process. Factors such as role seniority and complexity, required skills, salary competitiveness, location, openness to local or offshore talent, and working arrangements will also influence time to hire.

However, the biggest driver of both speed and quality is the job brief. This is where the magic happens. It’s far more than a job description – it brings the role and your organisation to life, giving us the context we need to position your opportunity effectively and tell a compelling story in the market. Taking the time upfront to clearly define the role, requirements, and what success looks like helps us attract the right talent from the outset, reducing delays and avoiding time spent reviewing profiles that aren’t the right fit.

Working with a specialist Salt consultant in your market also ensures you’re getting the right advice and tapping into established talent communities, so you see the right people as quickly as possible.

  • How do you ensure candidate quality and cultural fit?

Ensuring quality and cultural fit starts with the brief. We go far beyond a job description to build a deep understanding of the role, your organisation, leadership, and what success looks like – so we can identify candidates who not only have the right skills but will contribute and thrive in your environment.

We don’t simply send CVs. Every candidate is thoroughly screened to understand their experience, motivations, and what’s important to them. This includes competency-based interviews aligned to your brief, allowing us to assess capability, potential, and alignment to your organisation. Our consultants’ deep recruitment and specialisation expertise enables them to connect with, understand, and evaluate candidates’ responses in the context of your role and organisation.

We also conduct detailed verbal reference checks ourselves, tailored to your role and organisation, to gain deeper insight into performance, behaviours, and impact – adding another layer of validation and reducing risk.

There’s no cookie-cutter approach. Every role, every organisation, and every candidate is different, and our process reflects that.

  • What happens if a candidate doesn’t work out after placement?

We’re proud to have a 97% successful placement rate across our APAC business, reflecting the care we take to ensure smooth, effective transitions for both clients and candidates.

Our after-placement process includes regular check-ins with both the hiring manager and candidate to ensure everything is on track. If any challenges arise, we work with both parties to provide support, clarity, and solutions.

However, we understand that sometimes circumstances change. If a placement doesn’t work out, we’ll support you in line with the replacement guarantee outlined in our agreement.

In short, we share the risk with you, and we care. We don’t place someone and walk away – we’re with you every step of the journey, whether the role is temporary, contract, or permanent.

  • How are your recruitment fees structured?

At Salt, we don’t operate on a one-size-fits-all percentage of remuneration model. We provide flexible talent solutions and offer flexible pricing options to match, including project-based, fixed, retained, and unbundled fees, to ensure we can tailor a solution to your specific hiring needs and budget.

For contract or temporary roles, pricing is shaped by a number of factors, including the candidate’s pay rate (based on skills and experience), market conditions, and the nature of the employment arrangement. This may include statutory costs such as annual leave, KiwiSaver, and ACC, as well as a margin that reflects our ongoing management of the employment relationship and ongoing pastoral care for both client and candidate.

  • Do you have consultants based in each market you operate in?

Yes. We have consultants based in each of the markets we operate in, giving you access to local expertise and on-the-ground insight.

Each of our APAC offices is supported by our Centre of Excellence in Malaysia, which works across the APAC region to engage off-market talent daily, identify high-quality candidates, and strengthen our Salt community and speed-to-hire.

  • Can you support hiring across multiple APAC markets for the same role?

Yes – we can, and we do. We regularly support clients who are hiring the same role across multiple markets, or who are open to considering talent across different locations before deciding where to base the role.

We’ll work with you at the briefing stage to understand your needs, priorities, and context, and design the right approach and solution, whether that’s a multi-market search or a location-agnostic strategy.

Our New Zealand, Asia-Pacific, and global reach allows us to tap into deep talent pools around the region and the world, making the hiring process seamless and ensuring you have access to the right candidates, wherever they’re based.

  • How does Salt add value beyond recruitment?

At Salt, we complement our recruitment expertise with broader people solutions across the full employee lifecycle. We provide flexible, on-demand HR support across areas such as psychometric and cognitive assessments, learning and development, embedded recruitment, recruitment training, and outplacement.

These solutions are available on a project or hourly basis, allowing us to tailor our approach to your specific HR goals, business needs, and budget.

For organisations with more complex or evolving requirements, we help address broader workforce challenges by designing tailored people strategies across attraction, retention, and workforce planning. This can include multi-hire campaigns and scalable hiring programmes to support periods of growth or transformation.

We also offer project-based support, giving you on-demand access to high-performing talent and specialist teams, providing a flexible alternative to traditional agency models.

Rapid response support for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare

We delivered a complete project team within three weeks – including an in-house Team Leader and Practice Manager to oversee recruitment. To meet the 24/7 operational needs of the call centre, we implemented a creative sourcing strategy targeting a diverse pool of candidates with the flexibility to cover rotating shifts. The result: 100% fill and retention rates, and a +68 NPS score across the two-year project.

Supporting Aotearoa Clinical Trials from psychometrics to placements

Aotearoa Clinical Trials (ACT), New Zealand’s largest hospital-based research network, first engaged us in 2017 to support internal hiring with psychometric testing, particularly prospective employees’ propensity for critical thinking. In 2022, our partnership expanded to include recruitment, and by 2024, we had placed 32 candidates across permanent and fixed-term roles with a 94% fill rate. Alongside this, our People Solutions team continues to support ACT with bespoke psychometric projects – reflecting a trusted, cost-effective partnership built on shared values and tailored to ACT’s not-for-profit status.
