What is HR?

Human resources refers to both the people who work for a company or organisation and the department in charge of handling all employee-related issues. Employees are one of the most precious resources in any company or organisation.

HR responsibilities and job functions include locating, screening, hiring, and training job candidates and administering employee benefit programs. In the twenty-first century, HR plays a critical role in assisting businesses in dealing with a rapidly changing business climate and a higher demand for quality personnel.

The demand for HR

It’s not easy to work in human resources. To succeed, you must have a strong commitment and dedication. HRs have begun to realise how important they are in the industry and how they make everyone’s life easier.

HR’s job assists a firm in enhancing its market presence and positively impacts the firm’s bottom line. These learnings have positively impacted the demand for strong HR personnel in everything from SME’s to large corporations.

Recent changes in the HR industry

Some firms have started outsourcing some of the more typical administrative, transactional HR duties (such as payroll administration, background checks, and safety inspection) to free up the HR department to recommend and implement more meaningful, value-adding programs that positively influence the business.

Salt’s advice for getting a Human Resources job

  • Employers’ Requirements

Excellent communication skills, an awareness of the employee life cycle, analytical capabilities, and, in most situations, a tertiary degree are all required for HR positions. Regulations governing employment law are constantly evolving, and HR must stay on top of these developments and educate stakeholders to ensure employee participation.

  • CV Requirements

Certain crucial items should not be overlooked from any CV when applying for HR roles. Essential skills and competencies, as well as experience and accomplishments, must all be included. Employers will want to know that you can collaborate across departments, manage employee engagement, create change, and stay current on employment laws.

  • Interview Preparation

HR, Talent & People interviews are frequently broken up into phases, with the first commonly consisting of a behavioural evaluation with job candidates. If all goes well, you’ll be invited to meet with senior management or key decision-makers in the organisation for more meetings. These may involve:

    ● Psychometric testing
    ● Demonstrating computer skills
    ● Giving a prepared presentation or delivering a mock training session

  • Educational Requirements

Employers frequently give candidates with suitable qualifications in business, employment law, or human resources management preference. Humanities degrees in disciplines like psychology may also be beneficial. Postgraduate HR courses will increase your chances in the eyes of any potential employers for more specialised HR roles.

Top Tip

"As Steve Wynn said, "Human Resources isn't a thing we do; it's what runs our business". You can't go wrong if you're passionate about helping people attain their full potential while also favourably impacting the company's core."
